Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the history of the building in Kaunas, 85 Žemaičių Street, which can be classified as a part of the Kaunas architectural heritage of modernism. Since 1937, when the house belonging to the Franciscan Sisters was built, the building has changed its use several times. It was the first closed spiritual retreat house, then a dormitory for poor girls. During the Soviet era it was the Children’s Home No.1 and the State Pedagogical Museum, until 2002, when it was reclaimed by the nuns. Despite its rich past, the history of the building has not been explored and described in detail. Therefore, this article reveals this history through unpublished private documents from the funds of the Franciscan Congregation of the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Lithuanian Museum of Education, as well as the files of the Kaunas Regional State Archive, published memoirs and articles in the press from various periods. Letters to the editor published in “Kauno Tiesa” in 1989, which helped to preserve the integrity of the building’s territory, are analysed.
