Kaunas Blessed Sacrament Church: Discoveries from Research on the Nature of Façades

Summary/Abstract: The present-day Kaunas Church of the Blessed Sacrament has experienced a history of many transformations. When the building was returned to the Archdiocese of Kaunas in 1990, it was difficult to decide what should be done. There were far more questions and problems than answers and knowledge of what to do. First, you had to know and understand the building, which was still an Orthodox church on the outside, a cinema on the inside, and a Dominican church by nature, which you could neither see nor feel. The article presents the discoveries of the natural architectural research carried out in the previous Dominican Church in Kaunas between 2000 and 2023. It presents the birth of the first Dominican church, the main stages of the building’s development, the changes that took place during the reconstructions, the changes in style and function, and the surviving authentic elements of the different periods. The discoveries of natural architectural research and summaries are illustrated with a wealth of visual material: diagrams, iconography, photographs, and cartograms.
