Summary/Abstract: The present articles focuses on the activity of two literary groups, Club8 and OuTopos, that activated in Iași, towards the end of the 1990s and the early 2000s, and on their attempt to develop a local cultural alternative. Club8 included personalities that were already active on the cultural scene and the group’s activities culminated with national and international tours, the publishing of anthologies and the setting up of a publishing house. OuTopos, younger and consisting of students, was meant to be an alternative cenacle, providing blunt critiques and avoiding the traditional literary “courtesy”. Although they shared the same purpose – developing a cultural alternative mainly at local level – the different approaches lead to a natural separation of the two. The collaboration attempts were not fructuous and each group developed its identity independently. Club 8 focused on cumulating symbolic capital and on promoting itself as an alternative in the cultural segment while OuTopos focused on literature and creating its own platform, being more introspective.
