Summary/Abstract: The character Crispin, valet, appears in 1655 in Paul Scarron’s play L'écolier de Salamanque, and for almost two centuries he resists on the stage of French theatre. It comes from the parasite or slave of ancient comedy, but it also has influences of the zanni character type of the Italian commedia dell'arte. Before Crispin, the French comedy gave birth to many other famous valets.
