Summary/Abstract: Oral literature, as the oldest form of artistic expression through language, includes proverbs alongside other forms. Their content became more accessible to the public through incorporation into literary works, a process evident in Croatian literature from the emergence of Juraj Šišgorić and continuing to the present day. Thus, proverbs serve a multifaceted role: not only do they fulfill a didactic function, but also contribute to archival preservation and further dissemination. Croatian literary tradition is rich in proverbial material, which has been integrated into both prose and poetry. It is important to note that the period of the Croatian National Revival fostered a special appreciation for national cultural heritage, elevating proverbs to their highest status. Within this process, the distinguished writer Vilim Korajac contextualized the corpus of folk heritage into the social reality of his time, creating a fresco of a specific regional setting and influencing collective memory. This paper aims to illustrate the role and significance of proverbs in the prose work Šijaci by Vilim Korajac, classifying them according to the theoretical frameworks of Kekez and Čubelić and explain them in the context of the narrativestructure to which they are connected.
