Summary/Abstract: Beniamin Fundoianu (born Beniamin Wechsler/Wexler, Jassy [Romania] 1898 – Auschwitz-Birkenau 1944), a Romanian poet, essayist, literary critic, existential thinker, and theater director of Jewish origin, is widely known to the public as the French author Benjamin Fondane. He adopted this artistic pseudonym after moving to Paris in 1923. In France, he is primarily regarded as a disciple and continuator of the existentialist thought of the Russian philosopher Léon Chestov, as well as the author of essays on Arthur Rimbaud (Rimbaud le voyou, 1933) and Charles Baudelaire (Baudelaire et l’expérience du gouffre, posthumously published in 1947). The Dictionary of Philosophers from Antiquity to the 20th Century, edited by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, classifies him within the realm of philosophy and literature, alongside figures such as Jean Paulhan and Maurice Blanchot. In Romania, however, he is primarily known as a poet, notably as the author of the poetry collection Priveliști (Landscapes), published in Bucharest in 1930.
