Summary/Abstract: For many years, one might even say centuries, command wasassociated with a form of directing attributed almost exclusive-ly to military organisations. Over time, this form of directing hasincreasingly penetrated civilian organisations, in particular thevarious types of uniformed services. However, when consideringnon-army contexts, many people have doubts whether one shouldtalk about command, or merely about management, which usescertain elements, means and principles taken directly from com-mand. The aforementioned doubts were the reason for the formu-lation of the question: Should one be talking about command in thePolice? In the article, the author points out that command in thePolice is organised on the basis of patterns taken from the PolishArmy, although, of course, not applied directly and in full. Due tothe separateness and specificity of the Police, its tasks and duties, not all elements of the military command system could be appliedin this organisation, and some of them required (or still require)modification. At the same time, however, it can be concluded thatPolice principles, rules and hierarchical command structures arevery similar to military ones and that command is one of the formsof directing used in the Police.
