Summary/Abstract: Smart and welfare technologies have emerged as key tools for preventing isolation, providing independence, and improving health outcomes among older adults, though their implementation faces significant barriers in countries new to these technologies. This study examines the experiences and perceptions of older adults in Slovakia regarding smart and welfare technologies. A qualitative, exploratory design with reflexive thematic analysis was employed, and seven semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 51 older adults in Slovakia. The results show: (1) Older adults are constructive about their experiences and have a favourable perception of smart and welfare technologies concerning their health and personal care, social life, and generally. (2) They were insecure when their experiences were linked to language settings, cyber threats, and costs. (3) Practical considerations have both positive and negative aspects - physical and health limitations and a lack of digital skills hinder some individuals; for others, using the technology can empower the users with better digital literacy skills. The findings indicate that smart and welfare technologies can enhance older adults' independence in Slovakia, but adoption is limited by costs, expertise gaps, and privacy concerns, highlighting the need for targeted policies and support.
