Summary/Abstract: This review is concerned with William T. Cavanaugh’s book 'The Uses of Idolatry'. The origins and meaning of the concept of idolatry are presented, then the main threads of each chapter are discussed. According to the author, modernity is characterized by the fact that human religiosity has migrated – the cult is no longer directed towards deities, but towards human creations. The book is worth attention due to the interdisciplinary and reliable nature of research explaining the phenomenon of idolatry and its specific modern aspect. The author’s proposal to counteract the influence of idolatry is also interesting, but it has limitations resulting from the Christian perspective.
