Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to analyse all the passages in books VI to VIII of Galen’s treatise On Simple Drugs which refer to the formation of the names of certain plants. The study consists of two parts: in the first part, we will try to understand why most of the etymologies are presented as evidence, while others seem to be the result of suppositions; in the second part, we will focus on the different categories with which phytonyms can be associated (there are, however, no names inspired by mythical or historical figures). At the same time, we will highlight some of the patterns that govern their formation.
