The mysterious charm of (im)possibilities. “The Thechnique of my Musical Langyage” by Olivier Messiaen

Summary/Abstract: This study is in search of the key to the mystery of the enigmatic charm through which Olivier Messiain’s music enchants. Perhaps, this magician of a composer helps us to discover it. In his treatise “Technique de Mon Langage Musical” the author focuses on three main aspects of expression: rhythm, melody, harmony. Messiaеn unifies his two greatest innovations - non-retrograde rhythms and modes of limited transposition - in the “magical formula” of his language, which he names “the charm of impossibilities“
