Summary/Abstract: The Netflix documentary series Pretend It’s a City (2021) brings forth the writer and comedian Fran Lebowitz in a discussion with the famous movie director Martin Scorsese. Throughout the 7 episodes that make up the series, the viewers are likely to discover an unexpected perspective upon the city of New York. Scorsese interviews Lebowitz on various aspects related to New York, that reveals itself as a city full of paradoxes. In a vibrant and humorous way, Fran Lebowitz gives an account of the city that has shaped her as an individual. We learn about the adventures she had been through as a young woman trying to find her way in the City. Lebowitz also emphasizes the most important aspects of past city life that are now long forgotten, unfamiliar to the younger generation. In each episode another problem is tackled, the aim being that of highlighting the craziness of the present-day world. Nonetheless, it is this very craziness that makes the City the amazing place it is today. No matter how much you may hate the City, you cannot but admit that it is the best place for artists to create and thrive. It is this craziness along with the city buzz that combine to make the whole city of New York one of the most fascinating places in the world, where, despite the high crime rate, you can still have the most amazing experiences of your life.
