Summary/Abstract: This study aims to show some of the work that former Confederate General James Longstreet did during the Republican administration of President Hayes as US Minister in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople, between December 1880 and April 1881. The two letters addressed to him by representatives of the American community in Constantinople testify his presence there, as they testify the Ottoman government’s fiscal policies towards foreign residents. At the same time, during his diplomatic mission in the winter of 1880-spring 1881, James Longstreet, as a result of his talks with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, managed to inaugurate the mission of American archaeologists in the land of modern Turkey.
