Summary/Abstract: This paper begins with an overall view of the expressive potential of melodrama as a musical genre. The musical production of current Czech composers (Václav Bůžek, Petr Ježil and Martin Hybler) typically varies in their compositional styles and focus. In melodrama they concentrate on contrasting literary/thematic topics which therefore offer and result in specific compositions. In the melodrama and its interpretation elective course taught at the Music Department of the Pedagogical Faculty of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem the author also dealt with the interpretation of the melodramas of the composers mentioned above. (DVD examples of these melodramas were shown at the conference.)
