Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss the encyclical of John XXIII Pacem in terris in a broader context. The authors want to acquaint the reader with its preparation, editorial changes and other circumstances of its publication. They introduce the main protagonists involved in the creation of its working version, summarize the main points of the content, and point out the significance that this celebrated document played in the decades following its publication, especially in the question of the so called Ostpolitik of the Holy See in Czechoslovakia in connection with the activities of local priests who were in thrall to the regime and associated in several movements. In addition to the social encyclicals of other popes, John Paul II also invoked Pacem in terris when he called for peace in the context of the two Gulf Wars. It was also mentioned by Benedict XVI in Caritas in veritate. Pope Francis was the last to follow up on it in his encyclical Fratelli tutti, rejecting the concept of just war and calling for negotiation and peaceful dialogue in all circumstances.
