Summary/Abstract: The French art theory of the Enlightenment associates the blur with light brush strokes. Through the analysis of French art texts from the 18th century, the present paper aims to delve into how this notion can be paradoxically linked to the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn and Jean Siméon Chardin, both of whom are well known for their innovative painting methods. We propose some reflections on the two painters’ touch, and we also aim to examine the question that their unique layers of paint applied thickly on canvas raise: the proper distance to observe a painting to grasp both the whole and the details.
