Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes literary descriptions from selected short stories by Kornel Filipowiczin the context of preventive humanities and virtue epistemology. The author inquires intothe functions of description, showing it to be an exercise of patience, perseverance, andother intellectual virtues crucial not only for understanding literature but also for formingprosocial and anticipatory attitudes. The author considers the virtue of patience on threelevels – the descriptive situation, the description’s rationale, and the fragmentary natureof description in general – arguing that especially long and detailed descriptions, whilechallenging the reader’s attention, are ethical gestures capable of reforming the commonimagination, enhancing social and individual resilience, and supporting adaptability inthe state of permanent crisis.
