Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes selected poems by the Ojibwe poet Heid E. Erdrich in the contextof a discussion on the perception of indigeneous knowledge systems by researchersrepresenting the Western model of understanding and doing science. Erdrich’s workforegrounds the tendency in the Anglo-American tradition to dismiss indigeneousscience as a set of cultural and religious beliefs that are not based on rational thought. Thefirst part of the article explains the concept of biocolonialism and shows how pressing itis for indigenous communities not only in the scientific but also the political and culturalcontexts. The second part juxtaposes the indigenous and the Western models of scienceand modern biotechnologies based on genetics and genomics, which have given riseto such disciplines as population genetics and such products as home genetic testing. The third part provides a reading of selected Erdrich poems as an example of literarycommentary on biocolonialism and biotechnology.
