Summary/Abstract: The article aims to explore the process of translation and popularization of dramatic texts rendered from foreign languages to Yiddish by the Turkov brothers between 1919 and 1939, by employing Itmar Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory. The introduction presents brief biographical information on Zygmunt, Yonas, Marek, and Isaac Turkov along with an overview of their contributions to the development of Jewish theatre. Next, the underlying reasons behind the translation are discussed, as is the translatory collaboration between the brothers. The corpus of the relevant texts is presented, comprising forty works originally written in Polish, Russian, German, Czech, French, Italian, and English. The respective pieces are analyzed in terms of their genre classification, subject matter, as well as translation and stage strategies. Other available materials, including monographic publications, advertisements, press reviews, and archival documents, allowed the author to trace ways in which the respective plays were popularized by Turkow theatre groups in Europe and North America. The conducted study allowed the author to place the translated works in the broader context of their target audiences and impact on the Polish system within which Jewish culture was officially perceived as a minority phenomenon.
