Ladino or Judezmo? On the Languages of the Sephardic Jews

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to describe the history and to present the most important features of the languages of the Sephardic Jews. The subject-matter covers two languages: Ladino – defined as language-calque ({lengua-calco}) which was used in 16th and 17th centuries mainly to translate the {Bible} – and Judeo-Spanish ({judezmo}) which was an everyday language used as a means of communication. The paper summarizes the present knowledge of the subject in the Polish literature and deals with the common conviction treating Ladino and {Judezmo} as the same language. The description of the development of Sephardic language takes into account the differences in social and cultural contexts between the Sephardic in the west Diaspora (mainly in France and the Netherlands) and both the North-African and Turkish-Balkan ones. The newest history of the language in question – from the WWII to the present day – has been outlined in the paper as well.
