{Piszczac} – a Proposal of a New Etymology

Summary/Abstract: The local name {Piszczac} is an isolated case in Polish toponymy. The village located near Biala Podlaska enjoyed the status of a royal town in the 16th century and was called {Pieszczatka}. It was inhabited by Ukrainians and Poles. So far, etymologies pointed to roots {pisk-}, {piszcz-} ‘swampland’ known in Serbo-Croatian toponymy. The ending has been constructed as suffix {-acz} in Mazovian dialectal pronunciation {-ac}. Historical sources suggest, however, the existence of the form {*Pieszczatec} deriving from the Ukranian dialectal form {piszczatyj} - ‘sandy’. As a result of a morphological analogy, the Nsg form was accommodated to forms of other cases (G {Pieszczatca} > G {Pieszczacca} > G {Piszczaca} > N {Piszczac}).
