Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to review the definitions of euphemism functioning in linguistics from an axiological perspective. The criteria for identifying euphemisms formulated by A. Engelking (1984), A. Dąbrowska (2006), A. Krawczyk-Tyrpa (2001), among others, are analyzed. Related concepts such as dysphemism (cacophemism), X-femism and orthophemism are also discussed. The discussion concludes with an attempt to answer two research questions: whether euphemisms can value negatively, and whether positive axiological characterization or neutrality can be obligatory features of euphemisms.
