Summary/Abstract: When considering problems of senior citizens, we must set aside stereotype images like „Auntie’s little deer”, still alive in society. The elderly of today themselves are not willing to play the classical grandmother role either, since in the legendary 60s, in the beat era, those retiring now were in their twenties, and now, instead of serving only their grandchildren according to obsolete petty bourgeois idylls, want to live their own lives, travelling, holidaying, doing sports, having fun, shopping, and even working, while often longing for getting out of the restraints imposed upon them by financial difficulties. The paper gives an account of the factors determining their disadvantageous and underprivileged situation, which also hinder their integration in the information society. The authors draw attention to some good Hungarian and European initiatives and outline necessary steps to be taken by both government and society in this field.
