Summary/Abstract: Review of: Šubrt, Jiří ‒ Vinopal, Jiří ‒ Vávra, Martin: Když se řekne veřejné mínění... Praha: Univerzita Karlova, Nakladatelství Karolinum, 2024, 138 pages, ISBN 978-80-246-5836-0. The review considers a book whose authors analyse the phenomenon of public opinion, both from a general theoretical perspective and at the level of empirical research and measurement. In a relatively small space, evidence is presented of the diversity of views on the nature of public opinion in the fields of sociology, psychology and media studies. The authors address not only differing assessments of the nature of the public itself, but also factors that influence public opinions and attitudes, and with the relationship between individual preferences and public opinion as a social fact in the sense of Durkheim. The reviewer comments only on the theoretical and historical dimensions of the views presented rather than on issues concerning measurement methodology and the organisations involved in such measurements. The reviewer points out that any analysis of public opinion presupposes a deeper analysis of the functioning of society, which refers to public opinion at the level of the legitimisation of the ruling power.
