Summary/Abstract: In the winter of 2003–2004 the authors of the paper launched an experiment to explore the impact of the diffusion of ICT in a small Hungarian village, Cserénfa. They installed computers and Internet access in the homes of selected local families to study the advantages (and possible draw-backs) of information technology services offered on a personal network basis and compare them to institutionalized services. As a „tele-cottage” had been established in the village in order to offer Internet access for the local community, they compared its effectiveness to that of private access. Based on indicators of general well-being, they also investigated indirect social impacts of both ways of ICT diffusion on the living conditions and general ways of life in the community. In October 2005 they returned to the village and surveyed, by means of interviews, how their subjects’ life and their opinion on the Internet had changed in the meantime.
