Sociology of the Family as a Cross Field of the Social Sciences

Summary/Abstract: In the interdisciplinary fields, a problem about the topical balance in the subject contents appears inasmuch as the lecturers – coming from different disciplinary backgrounds – differ in their expert knowledge and research interest. Therefore a syllabus in one university may be extremely different from that in another. Moreover, even in case of a topical match, the understanding of the basic conceptual set may vary considerably. The article is an attempt to be established a coherent set of relevant topics in the field of Sociology of the Family. Twelve 12 topics are pointed out as a result of comparison between 62 syllabi on that subject: 1) Family & household; 2) History of the family; 3) Dating & mate selection; 4) Reproduction; 5) Marriage; 6) Parenthood; 7) Gender roles; 8) Social stratification; 9) Domestic violence; 10) Divorce and remarriage; 11) Ageing and care; 12) Family policies. In addition, attention is devoted to the conceptual borderline between the sociological approach and the nearest related sciences, social anthropology and demography.
