Summary/Abstract: This study explores the travels of Count Lajos Gyulay in Italy, using as its primary source the previously unexamined journal of the count, titled Hinna, the Book of 100 Days, which recounts events from 1843–1844. This ego-document provides various analytical opportunities. Firstly, due to its very nature as a travel journal, the text is closely linked to the history of travel. Examining the document's structure offers an initial insight into the key aspects of the author's life and further enables investigations into the specific characteristics of travel history and travel writing. At the core of the analysis is the 19th-century traveler’s gaze (John Urry), the way Gyulay constructs his identity through his journeys, how he observes and perceives his experiences abroad—whether related to events or people—and how he constantly reassesses geographical and symbolic boundaries.
