Summary/Abstract: Through their treatment of Arabs and the Crusades, the history syllabi in the period between 1945 and 1991 contributed to the growth of Orientalist discourse. The analysis of the latter is based on a reasonable grouping of several syllabi into thematic sets related to ideas about Arabs and the Crusades. The syllabi analysis is then further extended by the insights of contemporary historiography, as we attempt to view the documents of a bygone era in the light of the knowledge of that time while at the same time evaluating their content in the light of the knowledge available to us today. Analysis and explanation are thus intertwined in an attempt to show ways out of Orientalist and Marxist discourses, which would enable Slovenia and Europe today to understand better their own history, the history of their region and, above all, the origin of many of the prejudices and fears that people still hold today. In times of migration and globalisation, it is undoubtedly vital to question the views of the past and to seek ways of coexistence in the future.
