Summary/Abstract: The text is an example of close reading of the Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music by Ferruccio Busoni. The new reading is supported by several theoretical contributions to mediation theories, and, more precisely, theoreti- cal approaches to mediation and music/music mediation. Nevertheless, the new reading is relying on the influential interpretation of the Busoni’s essay written by Yugoslav music aesthetician Ivan Focht. This reliance is mostly evident in the segment on the modalities of music’s existence, as interpreted by Focht and based on Busoni’s Sketch. In this new reading proposal, implicit Platonistic and Pitagorhean layers (as suggested by Focht) are acknowledged. However, the emphasis is on Busoni’s thoughts that are shaped, more than a century after they were written, almost as arguments for the conceptualization of the theory of radical mediation in music. By using the chosen theoretical texts by authors coming from various disciplines, I will try to show how the more thorough embrace of radical mediation is needed in musicology where, while existent, this concept is still not exactly naturalized. The text first presents main ideas of the Busoni’s Sketch and its existing interpretations in Serbo-Croatian language. After that, certain limitations of the inter- pretations are pointed out, primarily regarding the dichotomies between ideal and real, or noetic and aesthetic. The possibility of radical mediation to overcome the limits of the dichotomies as conceptual tools is demonstrated, as well as main ideas of radical mediation relevant for the discussion at hand. The aim of this paper is twofold: beside the main intention of presenting alternative reading of Busoni’s text and thus demonstrating its validity and importance for the theoretical conceptualizations of the 21st century, the Sketch is at the same time used as an example of thinking about mediation of music in practice.
