Summary/Abstract: The Costina Collection took shape alongside Romania’s freeze following the July Theses. The Costina family's barricade—built among samples of poetically distilled, ideologically uncontaminated art—grew beyond the collector’s initial intent of providing his family with a beautiful setting, offering his daughter Sorina an opportunity to refine her taste, and securing for himself a refuge from the toxicity of the times. Gradually and unexpectedly, the Costina Collection became a valuable document of how some of Romania’s most creative painters and sculptors chose to resist amid the waves of absurdity and misery that followed the Theses.
