From Chicago and Paris to Bucharest and Iași, academies and universities would have acclaimed the exceptional work of the most formidable historian of religions since Mircea Eliade. Confetti would have rained down like spring wheat over newlyweds, and the deep lines on the great scholar’s face would have momentarily ceased their relentless carving. But Culianu died at just forty years old.
