THE SETTLEMENTS OF MRKOVIĆS – THE SONS OF MRKO IN THE LIGHT OF 16TH-CENTURY TAPU TAHRIR DEFTERS

Summary/Abstract: This paper seeks to identify the territory of the Mrković (Mrkojević) tribe in the hinterland of Bar and Ulcinj, their settlements and ethnic composition based on the only two preserved 16th-century Ottoman detailed cadastral surveys of the Iskenderiye (Skadar/Shkodra) sancak from 1570 and 1582. The Serbian translation of the Mrkov nahıye census from 1582 is presented in the appendix, while the list of Mrković names from 1485, so far known only in Albanian translation, is given in the text.
