Summary/Abstract: The introduction presents a short historical review of steel construction around the world. Basic information on steel and steel construction is also provided. Among Slovenia's bridge constructions: the new road bridge Podpeč (Ljubljanica); the Puh road bridge in Ptuj (Drava) ; the pedestrian bridge at Špica in Ljubljana; and two bridges for visitors to the Škocjan caves. In steel construction, bearing steel bar structures, and frame and skeletal structures have been utilised for a number of office, industrial, sports, social and residential buildings. In terms of architecture, the outstanding new builds are: the scrap metal junkyard complex in Pivka; the enlarged structure of the football stadium in Maribor and in Ljubljana; the Portoval centre in Novo mesto; the Nebesa holiday village at Livek above Kobarid; a residential house on the Ljubljana Marshes, and two mountain huts. Among refurbished structures, the interesting ones are the old civic electricity works; structures in the southern section of the former army barracks in Metelkova Street; and the elevation of the Mathematics Department of the UL. Recently, construction with steel modular elements has become very popular again. The article concludes with a description of the advantages of the bearing steel structures described.
