Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present archival succession in archival collections of private, noble, and, above all, magnate provenance. As a result of various succession processes, files of individuals and families, both related and affinal, as well as the others, were transferred to these archives. Archives, in whole or, more often, in part, changed owners primarily as a result of inheritance, change of property owners, collecting, and unlawful seizure. Archives were also taken over as a result of care provided to widows, orphans, estates or the archives themselves. The succession included both private (mostly) and public records. The first part of the article, addressed primarily to readers who are not professionally involved in private archives, presents their general characteristics, taking into account the changes occurring over time. The second, main part presents succession paths known to the author and supported by source examples. The work is based above all on private archives kept at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw, including primarily the so-called WarsawRadziwiłł Archive and on source literature.
