Summary/Abstract: The years 2013–2017 in the National Archives in Krakow saw the first research project concerning the location document of the city of Krakow issued in 1257 by Prince Bolesław the Chaste. The appointed team of experts led by Dr. Elżbieta Jabłońska, professor at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, conducted research in two areas: conservation and historical. The research was conducted in various research centres in Poland and Great Britain. The aim of the conservation research (collected in four reports) was to identify the document preparation technique, assess the current state, analyse the microbiological purity, establish a position on the conservation needs of the document and determine the conditions for its long-term storage. The historical research, based on the genetic identification of parchments (covered in two reports), concerned the establishment of an integral connection between the parchment of the document and a fragment of degraded parchment preserved with the loose seal of Bolesław the Chaste. The research conducted in the project provided answers to the questions asked by the project team. A technological description of the document and an assessment of its current state were prepared. Genetic tests did not confirm an integral connection between the fragment of parchment with the prince’s seal and the document. The team outlined directions for further in-depth technological research and assessment of the current state of the document based on modern research equipment and digital imaging.
