Summary/Abstract: The first months of Constantin Diamandi՚s mission in the Russian capital were to be “full”, during which audiences and visits took place continuously, the diplomat being received by numerous Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses and, finally, by Tsar Nicholas II at Tsarskoe-Selo. Diamandi still found himself in the period when a diplomatic career was perceived “by means of festivities, of parties at great courts, at great emperors, of putting oneself in contact with great people, hence a pleasant life”. But nothing could have foreseen the tragedy that the whole world was to experience with the outbreak of the Great War.At the head of one of Romania՚s most important diplomatic positions, Diamandi was to be involved in the negotiations for Romania՚s entry into the conflict. But participation in the war was to bring Bucharest the “richest harvest”. In this context, and in perfect agreement with Ion I. C. Brătianu, the president of the Romanian government, Diamandi negotiated with the Russian authorities in the troubled conditions of the war.At the negotiating table, everything counted. The course of the war, the internal situation in Russia, the trend of Romanian public opinion, dynastic relations, the connections that the diplomat had made in Petrograd – all these elements could and should have been advantages in the discus-sions that the plenipotentiary minister had with the Tsarist authorities.
