Summary/Abstract: In the wake of inconsistent data in the literature about Zmaj’s entry into the literary scene, the paper provides an overview of the existing information and – a contribution to the previous research results. The subject of the work is a reference to the poems Srbska zora (written in 1846, published in 1851 in the newspaper “Južna pčela”) and Proletno jutro (written in 1848, published in 1852 in LMS). The paper examines 1. the publishing context, 2. poetic preference (the first poem was written based on the poetry of Jovan Hadžić, the second based on the poetry of Pavle Popović Šapčanin), 3. the poet’s subse- quent affinity to these poems, which contributed to the confusion in the establishment of bibliographic chronology, 4. it points to the ranges of the existing reconstruction of Zmaj’s poetic beginnings and 5. it provides possible additional reasons that contributed to the (un)known sequence of citing data about these poems in Serbian literary history. The work highlights Vasa Milinčević’s merits in this field and indicates that Zmaj’s poetic beginnings have their roots even before 1849, as is often stated in the literature. Special attention is paid to the reasons that contributed to the findings that J. J. Zmaj declared the poem Proletno jutro as his first poem.
