Imagery in External Medical Communication. A Comparative Analysis of German and Czech Online Counselling and Discussion Forums

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the use of imagery in external medical communication using the example of selected German and Czech online counselling and discussion forums in the context of the skin disease psoriasis (Czech: lupénka). The question of the communicative performance of linguistic means of imagery, including metaphors, comparisons and personification, in the description of therapeutic measures, symptoms, etc. is investigated. In addition, the cognitive concepts underlying the imagery used in both languages are analysed, whether similarities and/or differences in their use can be identified and how text-external factors such as the communicative role of the users (medical professionals vs. laypersons) or text-internal factors such as the thematic focus of the forum affect the use of these means.
