Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present, based on the investigation of sources and specialized literature, the evolution of Lipova from a social and political point of view in the years 1608–1613, during the reign of the prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Báthory (1608–1613), a controversial personality but who paid special attention to the city of Lipova. Prince Gabriel Báthory was concerned about the situation of the city of Lipova, an important strategic point in the Mureș valley, which prospered in the years 1608–1613. The center of Arad county during these years was in Lipova. In 1608 and 1611 Gabriel Báthory reconfirmed the privileges of the city of Lipova but did not take serious measures regarding the restoration and strengthening of Lipova’s fortifications. As early as 1612, a pretender to the princely throne – Andrei Géczy – promised the Turks that he would cede the fortress and the city of Lipova to them. The gate even asks the sitting prince – Gabriel Báthory – to give up the border fortresses of Lipova, Ineu and Caransebeș in favor of the Turks. The maintenance of Lipova within the borders of the Principality of Transylvania becomes uncertain in 1613 in the context in which Gabriel Bethlen, the new pretender to the throne and later prince, promises the sultan to hand over Lipova.
