Summary/Abstract: In this article we have tried to outline some aspects of Avram Iancu’s biography and also shed some light on how he was received in the Romanian collective memory, since his lifetime until now. Avram Iancu is a personality of great impact in the Romanian collective sensibility, an important symbol of the struggle for freedom of the Romanians from Transylvania until 1918. An area of his diffusion and reception in the collective mind was created by the historiographic approach, but it was also reflected, over time, in literature and art and folklore creations. Since the interwar period, monuments and public representations, mostly busts and statues, were dedicated to Avram Iancu, and their number multiplied considerably after December 1989. Considering the extraordinary power of suggestion that he possesses and the ability to generate emotions at the mass level, Avram Iancu has often been “confiscated” and instrumentalized by the political discourse in Romania for the last 34 years.
