Summary/Abstract: This paper considers political position and role of the Senate of the Republic ofPoland from a historical and contemporary perspective. There is a need to notice thatsocial awareness of the history of this chamber and its current role in the politicalsystem seems to be insufficient. The work is an attempt to reconsider the significanceof the second parliamentary chamber during various historical periods until thesedays. There are also presented the most essential functions which ought to be fulfilledby the parliaments in democratic countries. Moreover, the author tries to discuss witha popular belief. According to it, the Senate in Poland could be closed down withoutserious harm to the state. In order to verify it, there have been mentioned the viewsof the Senate’s supporters and opponents. Furthermore, the author mentions the opin-ions stated in the doctrine of constitutional law on how to strengthen the position of“the chamber of reflexion”.
