Summary/Abstract: Religious songs in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition have generally not been explored in Bulgarian musicology. The aspiration is they to be included in the recent decades’ current trend of expanding and deepening scholarly research on Bulgarian church music. The main prerequisites for the appearance of religious songs were the penetration of the Western European music, as well as the development of the activity of Orthodox Christian brotherhoods and societies. School songs with religious content, which began to be created and published in the first Bulgarian collections of school songs from the 80s of the 19th c., as well as the urban song, also had an influence. Religious songs were part of the paraliturgical church practice and largely reflect the religious worldview of their time. From the 20s of the 20th c., the collection, creation and publication of a musical repertoire for the activities of the Christian brotherhoods, which is different from the traditional liturgical repertoire, began. Great was the merit of Petar Dinev, who compiled two collections of religious songs.
