Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses three plays by Dževad Karahasan: “Kralju ipak ne sviđa se gluma” (“And Yet, The King Does Not Like the Show”), “Kotač svete Katarine” (“The Wheel of Saint Cathrine”) and “Koncert ptica” (“Concert of the Birds”) in the context of using motives and forms of European (in one case – “Concerts of the Birds” – also Asian) theatre tradition. Both Karahasan’s prose is metatextual and referrent, and his dramatic plays often refer to motives, characters and forms taken from the history of drama and theatre.“The Wheel of Saint Cathrine” is formally a medieval morality play, themes and motives (“The Mouse Trap”) in the play “And Yet, The King Does Not Like the Show” are derived from the Shakespearean tradition and “Concert of the Birds” pays homage, in a contemporary satiric form, to great authors of two cultures – Aristophanes and Feriduddin Attar. The paper will show how selected references may affect the plot, profiling of the characters, the literary form of reply/response and other elements of drama. It will also attempt to illustrate a significant cultural value of the continuous immersion of Karahasan’s scripts in the European historical context and the significance of that immersion for the Bosnian-Herzegovinian theatre.
