Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author attempts to shed light on some dimensions of the concept of the “Bosnian cultural system” as described by Dževad Karahasan, especially in his essayistic prose. This cultural model, which Karahasan illustrates through the spatial structure of Sarajevo and which represents a particular variant of the paradigm of interculturality, can be described as the key to understanding the entire work of this Bosnian writer and seems to be constitutive of his poetics. The paper reconstructs some of the key elements of this cultural model, such as heterogeneity, the balance between the particular and the universal, and the ludic, dramatic and ironic character. It also attempts to show some parallels between Karahasan’s reflections on culture and the cultural theories of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Johan Huizinga or Ernst Cassirer.
