Summary/Abstract: This article examines the rapport between repertoire choices and self-confidence which ultimately impacts the quality of vocal performance. This research is based on semi-structured interviews with renowned opera singers that the author undertook during her PhD studies, as well as the author’s own experience as an opera performer and voice teacher in higher education. The conclusion proposes that there is a complex interplay between vocal technique, personal identity and the performer’s sense of artistic fulfilment.
