Summary/Abstract: This study suggests that the Jerusalem temple functioned, among other things, as a transformer of worshiper’s perspective of reality. It aided to see people’s earthly problems from heavenly point of view, or rather sub specie Dei, sub specie aeternitatis, and sub specie sanctitatis Dei. This function is demonstrated on the following Old Testament texts: Psalm 73, Habakkuk, Jonah 2, Isaiah 6, and Psalm 22. As promising as these texts are, each has its weaknesses when used as an example of the proposed phenomenon. The overall supportive argument here is cumulative and to establish the existence of this phenomenon with certainty requires further research. Therefore, instead of a conclusion, this study also suggests several key factors regarding the Jerusalem temple that most likely contributed to the transformation.
