Summary/Abstract: The topic of this article is to document the renewed interest of European general public for South-Eastern Europe, which coincided with the string of Imperial victories over the Ottomans in 1680’s. The conquest of Belgrade in 1688 by combined Austrian/Imperial army led by Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria gave strong impulse to the interest mentioned above. The conquest of Belgrade was seen as the beginning of the retreat of Ottomans from Europe and the victory of Christianity over the infidel.Numerous illustrated and engraved books were printedin Nuremberg, Amsterdam, Augsburg and Vienna, celebrating the great battle, such as those by Johann Baptist Gumpp, Romeyn de Hooghe, Pieter van den Berge, Giacomo de Rossi, although the authors usually did not witness the event in person.
