Summary/Abstract: Introduction. The aim of the study was to develop and validate the Parental Engagement Scale (PES), an experimental tool designed to measure the level of parental engagement of both mother and father, as perceived by their child. The originality of this approach lies in focusing on the youth’s perspective and operationalizing the construct concerning the theory of family functions. Methods: the study was conducted using the CAWI technique on a sample of 145 young adults aged 18–25 years. The psychometric properties of the PES were estimated using various methods to analyze reliability and validity. Results: the factor analysis indicated a unidimensional structure of the PES, as a 10-item tool, with separate versions – mother and father. The PES showed satisfactory correlation with two standarized scales, as well as high measurement reliability. Conclusions: the pilot study confirmed the appropriateness of the operationalization of parental engagement. However, constructing the full version of the PES requires further work.
