Summary/Abstract: The article provides an overview of the role of the Mother Tongue Society in collecting place names and presents statistics about the submission of place names (mostly according to parishes) in alphabetical order in 1960–2005. The prologue of collecting goes back to 1921; systematic collection of place names was started in 1922 when the guidelines were published in the journal Eesti Keel ‘Estonian Language’. Over the next twenty years the Mother Tongue Society collected about 56,000 slips with place names; in 1960–2005 the Mother Tongue Society alone has collected altogether 215,295 slips with place names in addition to maps, photos and schemes, and other unspecified attachments. No submissions have been made in the 21st century. By now the total number place-name slips amounts to about 600,000.
