The social psychology of language and intergroup relations

Summary/Abstract: Considering language being not a neutral vehicle of communication but also a space for manifestation of social psychological phenomena it is analysed empirically and theoretically from the point of the social psychology of language and intergroup relations. We show how Lambert's pioneering work on language attitudes demands an intergroup exploration of the linguistic code. The intergroup interpretation of language use is discussed considering the main concept of ethnolinguistic vitality (Giles et al., 1977) and the linguistic intergroup bias (Maas et al., 1989). Also the main theories that had an important contribution for establishing the intergroup perspective on language and language use are analysed, namely the speech accommodation theory (Giles, 1973), ethnolinguistic identity theory (Giles et al., 1977), and linguistic categories model (Semin & Fiedler, 1988).
